Moses has just come down from Mount Sinai, bringing his people the stone tablets, containing Gods ten commandments. Michelangelo depicts moses, as Gods prophet, seated, just as he portrayed the prophets in his work in the Sistine Chapel, which he was working on at the same time as the statue of Moses, for the tomb of pope Julius11.
