Calder Marshall was born in Edinburgh , Scotland , where he studied and practiced his art until he moved to London , where he worked under Chantrey and Bailey, two of England ’s most prolific marble sculptors.
Calder Marshall then spent time in Italy from 1836 to study antique marble sculpture and to further his own art and techniques, his marble sculpture was even compared to that of Canova. His marble sculpture favored the Greek profile and a generally classical look, but with a strong tendency in his female subjects towards purity, softness and girlishness. His best known public work is his marble statue group for the Albert Memorial, depicting Agriculture, Hyde Park , London .
He retired as an academician of the Royal Academe in 1892, and after his death, his London studio in Ebury Street was found to contain casts of nearly all his important sculptures, and his original antique marble sculpture is in the Royal Collection.
